Vice President - Corporate Accounting & Financial Reporting

The VP Corporate Accounting & Financial Reporting will be responsible for American Campus Communities (ACC) corporate accounting processes, internal controls, and polices and/or procedures. This leader will provide strategic financial insights to senior leadership to drive efficiencies and help position ACC for scalability and growth. This position will work closely with internal departments to include, but not limited to: Property Operations, Business Operations, Asset Management, Tax, Financial Planning & Analysis, Corporate Accounting, etc.

Critical Duties:
  • Align and drive efficiencies across the corporate accounting team and the organization to maximize Company performance and pursue achievement of long-term goals, profitability, and growth.
  • Oversee the corporate accounting operations including, but not limited to: accounts payable, general ledger, financial reporting, etc.
  • Oversee the generation of internal financial reports which summarize and forecast company business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
  • Oversee the timely and accurate completion of the consolidation month-end, quarter-end and year-end close process including the preparation of consolidated financial statements and related reports.
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees and ensures timely month-end close process. 
  • Oversee the review of the Company’s annual financial statements and footnotes for various private entities under the ACC structure, including joint ventures (JV).
  • Develop and maintain internal controls and reporting policies.
Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned)
  • Support senior leadership in strategic staffing of the Corporate Accounting Team designed to meet the current and future needs of the organization with a focus on scalability.
  • Collaborate closely with the Property Accounting team to ensure efficient execution of multiple annual external audits.
  • Support and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders across the organization as needed and/or requested to ensure those teams have the information necessary to successfully complete their duties.
  • Serve as a key leader and stakeholder for the Corporate Accounting department in organizational priorities and strategic initiatives that will support the Company’s future growth and ability to efficiently scale.
  • Understand and ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley, departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and utilize strong working knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to accounting systems, processes, reporting practices, etc. to lead day-to-day department operations, provide accounting policy and guidance to all areas of the business, and drive process improvements in line with overall goals and strategic initiatives of the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Carries out supervisor responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. 
  • Coach, train and develop a team while managing the workflow and prioritization of projects and ensuring on-time execution and completion.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and/or Finance, and/or 10+ years’ experience in accounting and/or financial operations.
  • 3+ years in a leadership role overseeing a large team.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) experience, including performing due diligence and post-close integration.
  • Experience within the Real Estate sector is preferred. 
Certificates/Licenses:
  • CPA Required.
